Health Insurance in Kenya 2025: Private vs SHA — What’s Changing?

With SHA replacing NHIF, many Kenyans are asking if they still need private health insurance. Here’s what’s changing and how to protect your family fully.

Kenya’s health sector is rewriting the rules again. The new Social Health Authority (SHA) is replacing NHIF—but it doesn’t mean your private cover is obsolete. It means you need to understand the new ecosystem.

SHA/SHIF (Government Cover):
Covers essential medical services—mostly inpatient care at selected hospitals. But it’s limited to public facilities and capped limits.

Private Medical Cover:
Offered by insurers through licensed intermediaries like Imana Insurance, these give you access to private hospitals, specialist treatment, maternity, dental, and optical cover. You can even pick plans for seniors, families, or SMEs.

Why you need both:

  • SHA handles basics; private cover fills the gaps.
  • You can use SHA as primary and private as top-up (dual billing).
  • Private covers can be customized from KSh 10,000/year and above.
