Personal Accident Insurance in Kenya: Benefits & Claims | Imana

Learn how Personal Accident insurance in Kenya covers accidental death, disability, medical expenses and lost income, including claims and exclusions.

A Personal Accident Insurance Policy Can Come Through When You Least Expect

An accident does not ask whether you have savings, medical insurance or people depending on your income. It simply happens—and the financial consequences can last much longer than the injuries.

A road crash, fall, workplace incident or sporting accident can result in medical bills, temporary inability to work, permanent disability or death. Personal Accident insurance provides financial benefits when an insured person suffers bodily injury caused by an accident, subject to the policy’s limits and conditions.

It will not prevent an accident. But when life suddenly flips the script, it can provide the money needed to recover, adapt and keep moving.

What Is Personal Accident Insurance?

Personal Accident insurance, commonly called PA insurance, provides defined financial benefits following accidental bodily injury, disability or death.

Depending on the policy, cover may include:

  • Accidental death
  • Permanent total disability
  • Permanent partial disability
  • Temporary total disability
  • Accidental medical expenses
  • Funeral expenses
  • Hospital cash
  • Mobility or rehabilitation expenses
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Repatriation of mortal remains

The exact benefits vary between insurers. A quotation should always show each benefit, its limit and any applicable excess, waiting period or condition.

Imana Insurance Agency’s Personal Accident authority page similarly identifies accidental death, permanent and temporary disability, accidental medical expenses and funeral expenses as key available benefits.

What Counts as an Accident?

An accident is generally a sudden, unintended and unforeseen event that causes bodily injury.

Examples may include:

  • Road traffic accidents
  • Boda boda or motorcycle accidents
  • Falls at home or work
  • Injuries caused by falling objects
  • Burns
  • Sporting accidents
  • Accidental drowning
  • Injuries involving tools or machinery
  • Assault, subject to policy terms
  • Accidents during travel
  • Accidental poisoning, where covered

Illness, gradual deterioration and ordinary wear and tear on the body are not normally treated as accidents.

The policy wording determines whether a particular event and resulting injury are covered.

Who Needs Personal Accident Insurance in Kenya?

Personal Accident insurance can be useful for almost anyone, but it is especially important for people whose income or responsibilities would be seriously affected by an injury.

Self-employed people

A business owner, consultant, trader, freelancer or casual worker may not receive paid sick leave. If an accident prevents them from working, their income can stop while household expenses continue.

Employees

An employer may provide WIBA, Group Personal Accident or another staff benefit. Employees should confirm whether that cover applies only while working or provides protection around the clock.

Students

Students can suffer accidents during school activities, sports, attachments, travel or everyday life. Student Personal Accident cover can provide financial support for accidental medical expenses, disability or death, depending on the selected benefits.

Drivers and riders

Motorists, taxi drivers, delivery riders and boda boda operators face regular road exposure. Motor insurance may protect the vehicle or third-party liabilities, but it does not automatically provide adequate Personal Accident benefits for the driver.

Parents and breadwinners

If a family depends on one person’s income, an accident affecting that person can disrupt rent, food, school fees and other obligations.

Professionals and business owners

A surgeon, engineer, photographer, technician or contractor may depend heavily on physical ability to earn an income. Permanent injury can affect both present earnings and an entire career.

Groups and organisations

PA insurance can be arranged for:

  • Companies
  • Schools and colleges
  • Saccos
  • Chamas
  • Sports clubs
  • Churches
  • NGOs
  • Associations
  • Community groups

Main Benefits of Personal Accident Insurance

Accidental Death Benefit

If the insured dies as a direct result of a covered accident, the policy pays the stated accidental-death benefit to the nominated beneficiary or eligible estate representative.

The benefit may help with:

  • Funeral expenses
  • Household bills
  • School fees
  • Outstanding debts
  • Immediate family needs

This is not the same as life insurance. Personal Accident insurance responds to death caused by a covered accident, while life insurance may cover death from broader causes, subject to its terms.

Permanent Total Disability

Permanent total disability refers to an accidental injury that permanently prevents the insured from performing work or results in a specified severe impairment, as defined by the policy.

If the claim meets the policy definition, the insurer may pay the full applicable permanent-disability sum insured.

Examples could include permanent loss of sight in both eyes or other severe injuries specified in the policy’s scale of benefits.

Permanent Partial Disability

Permanent partial disability occurs when an accidental injury causes permanent loss or impairment but does not meet the definition of total disability.

The payout is normally calculated using the policy’s scale of benefits.

A simplified formula is:

Permanent disability payment = applicable sum insured × assessed benefit percentage

For illustration, if the permanent-disability sum insured is KSh 1,000,000 and the policy’s benefit scale assigns 40% to the confirmed injury:

KSh 1,000,000 × 40% = KSh 400,000

The percentage is determined by the policy wording and medical assessment. It should never be assumed before the insurer evaluates the claim.

Temporary Total Disability

An accident may prevent someone from working temporarily without causing permanent disability.

Where included, temporary total disability may provide a weekly benefit during the certified period of incapacity, subject to:

  • A waiting period
  • Maximum weekly amount
  • Income verification
  • Maximum payment duration
  • Medical certification
  • Policy definition of disability

This benefit is particularly valuable to people whose income depends on being physically present and able to work.

Accidental Medical Expenses

This benefit reimburses eligible medical expenses resulting directly from a covered accident, up to the policy limit.

Covered expenses may include:

  • Emergency treatment
  • Hospitalisation
  • Surgery
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Prescribed medication
  • Follow-up treatment
  • Physiotherapy
  • Rehabilitation

Original bills, receipts and medical reports may be required.

Funeral Expenses

Some PA policies include a separate funeral-expense benefit following accidental death. This amount may be significantly lower than the main accidental-death benefit.

Families wanting broader protection against death from both accidents and natural causes should consider a dedicated last-expense insurance plan.

Hospital Cash

Where included, hospital cash pays a fixed daily amount for each eligible day spent in hospital following a covered accident.

It can help meet expenses that medical insurance may not pay, such as transport, meals or household support.

How Is a Personal Accident Payout Calculated?

Not every PA claim pays the entire sum insured.

Payment depends on:

  • Benefit affected
  • Sum insured for that benefit
  • Nature of the injury
  • Medical assessment
  • Disability percentage
  • Period of incapacity
  • Actual eligible medical expenses
  • Policy limits and sublimits
  • Applicable exclusions
  • Other policy conditions

Accidental death and qualifying permanent total disability may attract the full relevant benefit.

Permanent partial disability usually attracts a percentage determined by the scale of benefits.

Temporary disability may pay a weekly amount, while accidental medical expenses are generally reimbursed based on eligible bills up to the stated limit.

A Practical Example

Consider Mwangi, a self-employed electrician in Nairobi.

He suffers an accidental fall and fractures his leg. The injury requires surgery and prevents him from working for eight weeks.

If his PA policy includes the relevant benefits, it may respond through:

  • Accidental medical-expense reimbursement for eligible treatment
  • A temporary-disability benefit for the certified period he cannot work
  • A permanent partial disability benefit if the injury leaves a qualifying permanent impairment

Without this cover, Mwangi might face medical expenses and lost income at the same time. With suitable PA insurance, part of that financial shock can be transferred to the insurer.

Whether any amount is payable depends on the actual policy and medical evidence.

Personal Accident Insurance Versus Medical Insurance

Medical insurance and Personal Accident insurance are not interchangeable.

Medical insurance primarily pays eligible healthcare expenses arising from illness and injury. It may provide inpatient, outpatient, maternity, dental and other medical benefits.

Personal Accident insurance pays specified benefits following accidental injury, disability or death. It may include a lump-sum disability payment or weekly income benefit that medical insurance does not provide.

A person may need both:

  • Medical insurance for treatment
  • Personal Accident insurance for disability and income-related consequences

Personal Accident Insurance Versus Life Insurance

Life insurance generally provides a benefit after death from covered causes, including natural death, subject to the policy.

Personal Accident insurance usually provides a benefit only when death or disability results from an insured accident.

Personal Accident insurance should not automatically be treated as a substitute for life insurance, particularly where a family depends on the insured person’s income.

Personal Accident Insurance Versus WIBA

WIBA insurance relates to an employer’s statutory responsibilities when an employee suffers an injury or occupational disease arising out of and in the course of employment.

Personal Accident or Group Personal Accident cover may provide broader protection, depending on the policy, including accidents occurring outside working hours.

For employers, PA or GPA can complement—but should not be casually treated as a replacement for—required WIBA protection.

Does Motor Insurance Cover the Driver’s Injuries?

Not necessarily.

Third-Party Only motor insurance focuses on specified legal liabilities to third parties. Comprehensive motor insurance adds protection for the insured vehicle but does not automatically provide unlimited medical or disability benefits for its driver.

A driver Personal Accident benefit may be included or added, but its limit can be modest.

Motorists should confirm:

  • Whether driver PA is included
  • The accidental-death limit
  • Permanent-disability limit
  • Whether passengers are included
  • Medical-expense benefit
  • Exclusions relating to licences or intoxication
  • Whether the vehicle’s use is correctly insured

Common Personal Accident Insurance Exclusions

PA policies do not cover every injury.

Common exclusions may include:

  • Intentional self-injury
  • Suicide or attempted suicide
  • Illness or disease
  • Pre-existing physical conditions
  • Injury while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Criminal activity
  • War and related risks
  • Participation in hazardous sports
  • Aviation other than as a fare-paying passenger
  • Pregnancy or childbirth not resulting directly from an accident
  • Unlicensed driving
  • Motor racing
  • Professional sporting activity
  • Injuries arising from an excluded occupation
  • Events occurring outside the geographical limit

Some risks may be accepted through special underwriting or an extension. Disclose hazardous occupations, sports and activities when requesting cover.

How Much Does Personal Accident Insurance Cost?

PA insurance premiums depend on the level of risk and selected benefits.

Insurers may consider:

  • Occupation
  • Age
  • Sum insured
  • Accidental medical limit
  • Temporary-disability benefit
  • Nature of work
  • Travel exposure
  • Hazardous hobbies
  • Individual or group arrangement
  • Claims history
  • Geographical scope
  • Optional extensions

An office administrator and a construction worker seeking the same sum insured may receive different quotations because their accident exposures differ.

The cheapest policy may also have lower medical limits, no weekly income benefit or restrictive disability terms. Compare the benefit structure—not just the premium.

Information Needed for a PA Quotation

To obtain an accurate quotation, you may need to provide:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Occupation
  • Description of duties
  • Preferred sum insured
  • Required medical-expense limit
  • Monthly or weekly income
  • Hazardous activities
  • Travel requirements
  • Claims history
  • Number of people to be covered

Groups may also need to submit:

  • Member or employee list
  • Dates of birth
  • Occupations
  • Payroll or earnings information
  • Work locations
  • Benefit categories
  • Claims experience

Accurate occupational information matters. Describing a construction worker as office staff can affect a future claim.

What to Do After an Accident

Seek medical attention

Safety comes first. Obtain treatment and keep the medical reports, prescriptions, bills and receipts.

Notify the insurer or intermediary

Report the accident as soon as reasonably possible. Some policies specify a notification period.

Report the incident to the relevant authority

A police abstract may be required for road accidents, assault, accidental death or other reportable incidents.

A workplace accident may require the applicable employer and occupational-safety reporting process.

Complete the claim form

Provide a clear and accurate description of what happened. Avoid speculation or inconsistent versions of the incident.

Continue medical follow-up

Disability cannot always be assessed immediately. Permanent-disability claims may require the condition to stabilise before a final medical assessment can be made.

Documents Required for a Personal Accident Claim

Requirements depend on the benefit being claimed.

Common documents include:

  • Completed Personal Accident claim form
  • Copy of the insured person’s ID or passport
  • Insurance policy or certificate
  • Police abstract
  • Initial medical report
  • Discharge summary
  • Treatment notes
  • Original medical bills and receipts
  • X-ray, scan or laboratory reports
  • Sick-off records
  • Employer’s statement
  • Proof of income
  • Final disability assessment
  • Death certificate for a fatal claim
  • Burial permit
  • Beneficiary identification
  • Post-mortem report where required

The insurer may request an independent medical examination before determining the degree of permanent disability.

Why Personal Accident Claims Get Delayed

Common causes of delay include:

  • Late notification
  • Missing medical records
  • Inconsistent accident descriptions
  • Failure to provide original receipts
  • No proof of income for a weekly benefit
  • Disability assessed before the condition stabilises
  • Missing police documentation
  • Undeclared occupation
  • Policy lapse
  • Need for further investigation

Working with an insurance intermediary can help the claimant understand what is required and follow up with the insurer.

The underwriting insurer remains responsible for assessing liability and approving or declining the claim.

How to Compare Personal Accident Policies

Before purchasing cover, compare:

  • Accidental-death benefit
  • Permanent total disability benefit
  • Permanent partial disability scale
  • Temporary total disability benefit
  • Weekly payment limit
  • Accidental medical-expense limit
  • Funeral benefit
  • Hospital-cash benefit
  • Occupation classification
  • Territorial scope
  • Hazardous-activity exclusions
  • Age limits
  • Claims procedure
  • Premium-payment terms

A headline sum assured of KSh 1 million does not necessarily mean every injury pays KSh 1 million. Each benefit must be read separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Personal Accident insurance mandatory in Kenya?

It is generally voluntary for individuals. Employers have separate statutory obligations under WIBA, while schools, financiers, professional bodies or contracting organisations may require PA cover in certain circumstances.

Does PA insurance cover illness?

Ordinary illness is generally not covered. PA insurance responds to accidental bodily injury, subject to the policy definition.

Can students buy Personal Accident insurance?

Yes. Student PA policies may cover accidental medical expenses, disability and death during the insured period.

Can I have PA and medical insurance together?

Yes. The two policies serve different purposes and can complement each other.

Does PA insurance pay the full sum insured for a broken leg?

Not automatically. Payment depends on whether the injury results in an insured disability, the applicable benefit and the policy’s scale of compensation.

Does PA cover accidents outside Kenya?

Some policies offer broader geographical protection, but territorial limits and repatriation conditions must be confirmed before travelling.

How soon is permanent disability assessed?

The insurer may wait until the medical condition has stabilised. The required period and assessment process depend on the injury and policy.

Can a family be covered under one PA policy?

Some insurers offer family or group arrangements. Ages, relationships, benefits and premiums must be confirmed for every insured person.
